Palm Springs

A great take on Groundhog Day, with a little more heart.

Those Lonely Island boys just keep getting better and better.

Becky thoroughly enjoyed it. She kept asking "why have I never heard of this movie?!"

Toy Story

In keeping with the theme of two, Toy Story 2 is also bigger and better.

You see human faces, more sets, particles, reflections, and textured fabric.

I remember watching Toy Story 2 and Shrek 2 a lot as a kid. One day Toy Story 2 was delivered to us as a VHS, and we had Shrek 2 on DVD with Far Far Away Idol; what a show!

In this way, I’ve been conditioned to enjoy the twos. With success, more people will buy the iteration.

Because I saw these movies as a kid, I was surprised by the writing in Shrek 2 and more surprised by the scenes and assets in Toy Story 2, as well as the writing.

My adolescent brain couldn’t see more than the centre of the frame. It also could have been that quality VHS tape.¹

  1. “Be kind, please rewind.”

Shrek 2

If there’s ever a second movie, it will always be bigger, better, expensive. You get a second chance. We can do things right this time!

Shrek 2 is the second movie.

Past number two, it’s all cash, baby.

Don’t watch Shrek the Third.

Music is great. Jokes are great. You get lost in the world of Far Far Away.

Dialogue isn’t great.

The Bubble

It’s kind of funny?

It took us 3 nights to watch it.

The colour correction was very dark.

Harry Trevaldwyn is a delight.

The TikTok scenes were great.

The movie is about making a movie in a pandemic, and how hard it is. The movie they’re making doesn’t go well.

The very end scene is the producers and director questioning whether they ‘have enough for a cut’. They decide ‘at least we tried to make a movie’. Then they pat themselves on the backs saying, ‘we made something for everyone in these trying times’.

The movie — as a whole — is the punchline.

This must be what Judd Apatow films are like. Funny improv edited together so they’re coherent enough to picture lock.

Gilbert

To be a loud Gilbert, you need to be a quiet and humble one too. Wonderful film.
